| Album notes |
Sepultura: Max Cavalera (vocals, guitar); Andreas Kisser (guitar); Paulo Jr. (bass); Igor Cavalera (drums). Additional personnel: Henrique (sythesizer); Kent Smith (sound effects). Recorded at Morrisound Recording, Tampa, Florida. Includes liner notes by Don Kaye. After becoming one of the most acclaimed bands in metal with BENEATH THE REMAINS, Sepultura could have easily recorded a slightly more accessible album and aimed for Metallica-like superstardom. Instead, the Brazilian quartet stuck to its guns, and the result was ARISE, a record that plays to the group's thrash-metal strengths without sacrificing any of its ferocity. The title track features an ominous intro and razor-sharp dual-guitar lines, while the single "Dead Embryonic Cells" boasts a heavier-than-thou groove and a sludgy, Sabbath-like interlude. Frontman Max Cavalera and guitarist Andreas Kisser's bleak lyrics are typically direct here, taking on issues such as technology (the aforementioned single), cowardice ("Altered State"), and violence ("Murder"). A companion piece to BENEATH THE REMAINS, ARISE marks the end of Sepultura's classic-metal phase; on the subsequent CHAOS A.D., the group would lean towards a stripped-down, hardcore-influenced sound and incorporate tribal rhythms, resulting in even greater international success. (Note: The 1997 remastered version of ARISE features four bonus tracks, including a cover of Motorhead's "Orgasmatron.")

4 Stars (out of 5) - ...ARISE remains their thrash high water mark, sounding like an angry man throwing tools at an urinal while reading the Book Of Revelations... Q (11/01/1996)
